New Year’s Day is just around the corner, and with it comes the end of another holiday season, but the start of a fresh, new year, filled with new opportunities and the best memories waiting to be experienced. After celebrating all of the holidays, the last thing you’ll want to do is start planning for the year to come - but that’s exactly what you should start doing! If you’re a senior in this new year, then the beginning of the year is the best time to start planning your senior photos. If you think the last year went by quickly, this one will go by much faster, so it pays to be prepared! Here are a few reasons for doing it.
Booking - A lot of photographers are booked well before the season that you might want your senior pictures, so there’s no better time to book your senior session with your favorite photographer than at the very start of the year. That way, you can rest easy knowing that you’ll have the pictures that you’ve been dreaming about since you started going to high school. While it may be tempting to convince yourself that you have plenty of time and that they’re sure to have a spot for you come spring or summer, the solace of knowing that you’re safe and sound is much better - trust me!
Scheduling - Senior photos take almost a full day to shoot, and much more time to plan out. If you’ve ever been a senior though, you’ll know that your time will be incredibly stretched as you finish up high school. Across studying for homework, tests, clubs, and everything in between, you’ll find it hard to make time to plan for your senior session. If you start planning now, you’ll have much more of an ability to plan out each detail, like what you’ll wear, what your location(s) will be, what time of day you’d like the shoot to take place, and even what music you’d like playing during your session. There’s a lot to plan, but if you start now, you’ll have plenty of time to make your dreams come true.
Location Hunting - Speaking of all the details you’ll need to plan, a major one is location. Now, your photographer will absolutely help you with this one, which will make things much easier, as they often have spent many hours exploring the surrounding areas for the perfect spots. But, because you know you better than anyone else, you might like to find locations that are special to you and represent who you are. Sometimes, that means you’ll need to scout around for your favorite locations, and if you start doing that now, you’re sure to have a huge catalog of beautiful spots to choose from when it comes time to put the session together.
Documenting - New Year’s Resolutions are a wonderful (or awful, depending on your perspective) tradition that go back quite a ways, and they’re great for testing your discipline. One great resolution you can make this year is to document your life, through journaling or making videos, or taking a picture of something meaningful to you every day and writing a few sentences about it. Your senior pictures are the biggest way you can document your life in the new year, because they are (or should be) true representations of who you are, capturing you just as you are - an almost-adult about to leave high school and start a grand adventure! You’ll never live these moments again, and they’re worth capturing.
Those are just a few of my reasons for why you should be thinking about your senior photos as we go into the new year! It pays to be prepared, especially with something that will only happen once in a lifetime. The more time you spend on it now, the better and more personalized it will be!
