Three years ago, my best friend Vivian died suddenly from a brain aneurysm at age 41. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her. She was the most vivacious and giving person I’ve ever known. Her laugh was big, loud and contagious. Her soul was encouraging, loving and kind. She was the epitome of a free spirit. She lived her life, really lived it. We had more than one late night talk around the campfire. She had no regrets. None. We both agreed if we left this earth that night, we had enjoyed every bit of it. Vivian lived and loved every moment of her life. Her momma knew being a donor was her legacy. Vivian saved five lives the night she passed.
Over 115,000 men, women and children are on the waiting list for life saving organ transplants. The largest football stadium could not hold all those waiting for an organ. Every 10 minutes another person is added to the national transplant list. Eighty two percent of those are waiting on a kidney. Every organ donor can save up to 8 lives. That is just an incredible to me… 8 lives!!
April is Donate Life month. Are you a organ donor? I have always been. I work part time as a respiratory therapist at Cottage Hospital and get an up close and personal view of the impact organ donation can have on so many people’s lives.
Our team, LivLikeViv, will be participating for our third year at the Donate Life Run/Walk next weekend sponsored by One Legacy Foundation. If you'd like to join our team or give to a good cause - Click here.
Please talk to your loved ones about organ donation. Life comes at you fast and changes in a heart beat. Just like Vivian, you or your family member could save a life.
